Privacy Notice
Last updated: 11 September 2026
Introduction
Recorde is open source, self-hosted web analytics software. This notice covers two things: how this website (www.recorde.io) handles visitor data, and what the Recorde software collects when a site owner installs it on their own site.
This website
www.recorde.io measures its own traffic with a Recorde instance that we run. It collects the same data described below, uses no cookies, and stores no IP addresses. We do not use any other analytics or advertising trackers on this site.
If you email us, we keep your message so we can reply. We do not add you to any mailing list.
What the Recorde software collects
When a site owner installs Recorde on their website, the tracking script sends the following to that owner's own server:
- Page path (query strings are stripped) and referrer
- UTM campaign parameters
- Device type, browser, and operating system
- Screen width
- Country-level location, derived in memory from the IP address, which is then discarded and never stored
- A rolling session identifier kept in sessionStorage, which expires after 30 minutes of inactivity and is cleared when the tab closes
- Custom events and metadata the site owner chooses to send
What it does not collect
- No cookies
- No fingerprinting
- No stored IP addresses
- No names, emails, or account details of visitors
- No tracking across websites
- No form inputs or keystrokes
Who holds the data
Recorde is self-hosted. Data collected by a site's Recorde instance is stored on that site owner's server and is not sent to us or to any third party. The site owner is responsible for that data and for their own privacy notice. We have no access to it.
Opting out
The tracking script honours the Global Privacy Control browser signal automatically. On any site running Recorde you can also opt out by visiting a page with #recorde-optout in the URL, or by running recorde.optOut() in your browser console. The opt-out is stored in localStorage and persists until you clear your browser data. See the setup guide for details.
Verifying this notice
The tracking script and both services are open source. Everything described here can be checked against the code in the repository.
Changes to this notice
We may update this notice from time to time. When we do, we will revise the "Last updated" date at the top of this page.
